We'd have one, if we knew what they were.

Yesterday, a friend reminded me of one of the most evil of all brain teasers, which is the question:

“Physiologically speaking, what is a thought?

It’s interesting that as happy as one might be to provide a smarty-pants, toss off answer like “it is a set of biochemical interactions in the brain“, this would in fact not be correct.

Feel free to provide the correct answer below; we’ll be back next Friday with an explanation.

Excuse me, but you left an ort of Zedonk slumgullion in your bowl.

I like to think I have a pretty decent vocabulary, but once in a while I get blindsided and completely fail one of those “test your vocabulary” tests. My word bank hit a wall this week with the items below, so I thought I’d share. These words are so weird that it’s almost more fun to MAKE UP definitions for them, so feel free to do so in the comments, but we’ve included them right here anyway. How many of these words do you know?

1.) ort
2.) slumgullion
3.) zedonk
4.) interrobang
5.) bezoar

1.) n. a scrap or morsel of food left at a meal.
2.) n. a stew of meat, vegetables, potatoes, etc.
3.) n. the offspring of a zebra and a donkey.
4.) n. a printed punctuation mark, available only in some typefaces, designed to combine the question mark (?) and the exclamation point (!), indicating a mixture of query and interjection, as after a rhetorical question.
5.) n. a calculus or concretion found in the stomach or intestines of certain animals, esp. ruminants, formerly reputed to be an effective remedy for poison.

It's surprisingly challenging for some.

This little brainteaser was making the rounds recently. Can you find the mistake? Aside from the fact that whoever created the graphic saved it as a jpeg?

We’ll have even more challenging brainteasers when we launch our site Quiztistic.com…

We still haven’t gotten a response on the question we posed last week to highlight the impending (by 2013 is “impending”, right?) launch of Quiztistic.com, so we have an even more difficult challenge this week. If you think the statement below is untrue, Danza choke window for your head:

Due to constriction of the inferior alveolar nerve on its way to the tongue, there is only a limited combination of sounds a human being can make. For example, it is impossible to pronounce the words “eye”, “laws”, “dug”, and “aim” in sequence.

Who do you think we are? Ask.com? We’ll be back Monday with our regularly scheduled quotes, but NO FACTS FOR YOU until we see some hands being raised out there. Anyone?
The Quiztistic Edition

Usually on Friday, we serve up some interesting facts, but one of the sites that we’re developing is Quiztistic.com, which will feature facts, quizzes, puzzles, and games. One theme we’re pondering is an “Okay, Smartypants” feature, wherein we pose a question that people who think they’re intelligent should know the answer to, but probably don’t. Here’s our first example:

What is the primary reason for the difference in American vs. British pronunciation?

Good luck.
